From the Pastor’s desk— September 21, 2025

Dear Parishioners,

Hear me out. Two weeks ago, a young man named Charlie was killed while hosting an event for college students to debate controversial political topics. He was controversial, but the mix of public reactions surprised me. Some wept, but many laughed. I didn’t comment last week because I needed more time to take it all in and think about it, but the air is still thick. The catholic schools in Springfield are even taking measures to increase security for school masses.

I want to share some data I found on our political climate and then offer some spiritual reflection.

According to a September 11, 2025, poll on YouGov.com, both liberals (75%) and conservatives (73%) believe that violence from the other group is the bigger problem, and only 5% or so see it in their own party. Whether liberal or conservative, do not be afraid of speaking your mind, but also listen to what others say. Jesus said, “If the world hates you, realize it hated me first (Jn 15:18).” There is a common truth we can come to if we listen to Jesus, who also said, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (Jn 8:31).”

Another poll question asked, “Is it ever justified for citizens to resort to violence in order to achieve political goals?” The answers showed a trend that the more conservative someone is the less likely they are to justify this: 1 in 4 “very liberal” and 1 in 6 “liberal” to 1 in 20 “conservative” and 1 in 30 “very conservative. How that plays out in real life, I don’t know, but liberal or conservative, if you have friends who have views in favor of political violence, share with them the Gospel of Peace! Jesus said, “Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

” We are called as Christians to be fearless proclaimers of the gospel. We are called to be fearless peacemakers. The world needs someone speaking the Word of God into it.

May Charlie rest in peace, together with the school children killed last month in Minnesota and all victims of violence. May the many wounded hearts of this world be healed and may violence cease. May the peace of Christ reign. Thank you.
