IN TODAY’S
GOSPEL, JESUS SENDS OUT THE DISCIPLES TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OTHERS. HIS ADMONITION TO THEM IS THE SAME CHALLENGE
HE MAKES TO US: “THE GIFT YOU HAVE
RECEIVED, GIVE AS A GIFT.”
MESSAGE FROM FATHER TOM
In our first
reading Moses tells the people, “Take these words of mine into your heart and soul. Bind them at your wrist as a sign, and let
them be a pendant on your forehead.” And
what words are these? “A blessing and a
curse.” The people are given a
choice. Do the people follow God or will
they follow the gods? There is no room
for neutrality or straddling a fence; even a non choice is a choice. And in the gospel today Jesus says that
either we act on his words or we don’t; if we don’t, we’re “fools” but, if we
do, we will be safe on the day of judgement.
The gospel interestingly points out that the Lord is not so much
concerned with the “mighty deeds” that we do but rather whether our deeds are the will of God, or simply doing
our own will. One time a friend of mine
was upset that he did not get recognition for something he did; I mentioned to
him that I thought his concern should have been if what he did, no matter how
worthwhile it was, was it God’s will? In
Paul’s words to the Romans he also brings this out. As Paul puts it, we are “justified by faith
apart from works of the law.” And
remember “faith” does not refer to belief in doctrinal statements but “loyalty”
to Jesus, or God. Or to phrase it
differently, do we follow Jesus by seeking the will of God as Jesus did? Do we do our will, no matter how
good it may be, or do we do God’s will? It’s a hard question because people are
basically good and what they do usually is good, or perhaps neutral, but can we
put what we want to do aside and, in the words of the scriptures, “seek first
the Kingdom of God,” seek God’s will first?

THE THOUGHTFUL GIVER
You don’t have to be a
Rockefeller, a Vanderbilt or a Ted Turner to be a philanthropist. You just have to care about the world around
you. You have to care about what’s going
to happen to that world after you’re gone.
When you set aside a little in your will for our parish, the causes you
care about most will live on. You can
help make a lasting difference right here.
We are deeply grateful to those who have remembered the parish in their
estate plans.

through donations from the Catholic parishioners that the work of the CCC is
possible. Please contribute generously
to the Campaign in the upcoming parish collection. Half of the collection will remain in our
diocese to fund local Catholic communication efforts. Visit their website at www.CatholicCommunicationsCampaign.org.
